What to watch for when renting in Spain

Rent, buy, or bring your own
Renting makes sense in the first months, because you need a NIE to register a car in your name and that takes a while. Bringing your own car is possible, but converting it to Spanish plates costs time and money and rarely pays off with an older car. Buy once your NIE is through and you know where you will live.

Frequently asked questions
Can I drive on my existing licence?
With an EU licence you may drive in Spain. Once you become a tax resident there are rules about registering or exchanging it; we work that out for your situation.
Do I need a NIE to rent?
A NIE is usually not required for a short rental. For a longer rental this can vary by provider and situation, so we check the requirements in advance.
Can you register a car in my name?
That is done by a gestor with the right authority. We arrange your NIE and put you in touch with someone who handles the transfer.
