Scam warnings

Most people are honest; this is just about staying alert. A few common pitfalls and how to stay safe.

Renting and buying

Never pay a deposit or rent for a property you did not see, without a real contract; always ask for proof. A price far below market is a warning. Check the agent really exists.

Papers and services

Do not pay cash to street offers for the NIE or papers; use a registered gestor or trusted service. Official appointments go via cita previa, not middlemen asking for money.

Money matters

Never make a large transfer without verifying the party. Be careful if someone insists on cash and urgency, and watch for exchange-rate or money-changing tricks.

Online

Beware fake ads on marketplaces and social media, and phishing in the name of a bank or authority. Do not click links; go to the official site yourself and pay safely.

On the street

Watch for distraction tricks and pickpocketing in busy places and terraces. Keep your bag and phone close.
