Practical info

Everything a newcomer arranges and should know after arriving, organised by topic. Official rules can vary by municipality and change; we give you the current details.

Papers and registration

You need a NIE for almost all admin, and often an empadronamiento (registration at the ayuntamiento). A bank account and a digital certificate or Cl@ve make online dealings with the government easier. We guide the NIE and bank applications.

Health

There is public and private care; newcomers often take a private health policy. You recognise the pharmacy (farmacia) by the green cross. The general emergency number is 112. See our insurance service for help with the right cover.

Transport

Around Alicante there are buses, trams and trains. For driving, mind your licence and the compulsory car insurance; from outside the EU an international permit is sometimes needed. We can arrange a rental car.

Housing and utilities

You connect or transfer water, electricity and gas; internet and phone come with a SIM or contract. Waste is separated via neighbourhood containers. For renting or buying see the properties section and the service pages.

Daily life

Shops often close around midday for a break. On local and national holidays much is closed; dates vary by year. Besides Spanish you also hear Valencian here. Keep handy apps and key numbers at hand.
