From refreshing horchata to local Monastrell wine, the Costa Blanca has lovely drinks. A word on responsible enjoyment at the bottom.
Soft and non-alcoholic
Horchata (from chufa, the tiger nut, often with fartons) is refreshing on a hot day. Also mosto (grape juice) and fresh zumo.
Wine and bodegas
The area around Alicante is known for full wines from the Monastrell grape. A bodega is a wine house; feel free to ask for a local wine. There is also cava, Spanish sparkling wine.
Aperitif and alcoholic
Agua de Valencia (cava and orange), a fresh caña (small beer), tinto de verano (lighter than sangria, popular at lunch), vermouth as a classic aperitif, and sangria.
Coffee and warm
Café con leche, café solo (espresso), cortado (with a dash of milk) and carajillo (coffee with a shot of spirit).
In moderation
Enjoy in moderation. Alcohol in Spain is allowed from the age of eighteen.
